Stress can come in many forms. We also find that stress can either help us or hurt us.
Bad stress, or distress, has the ability to cause anxiety or fear in our life. As chiropractors, most of the problems that we help our patients with are actually caused by the bad stress in their life. Some examples are emotional stress from family issues, a bad home environment, or issues at work. Another example is physical stress from falls, athletic injuries, or even repetitive activities such as lifting weights and vacuuming. Lastly, there is the chemical stress from things such as alcohol, tobacco, excessive caffeine use, or even cleaning products.
But not all stress is bad, there are several forms of good stress, or eustress, that will help you grow and be a better person. Some examples of this are starting a new job, learning a new hobby, or even going on vacation. These things make you feel motivated to perform well. They also help you balance out the sources of bad stress.
So lets all take a moment to evaluate our own life. What are the things that provide us stress? Are they helping us by providing some eustress in our day, or are they hurting us by giving us some extra Distress? Take a moment to reflect on this personally, and perhaps think of some ways to eliminate the distress, and add more sources of eustress.
