A concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head. There's been a reported 1.6 - 3.8 MILLION concussions each year due to sports or recreational activities.
Symptoms of concussions include headaches, slowed reaction time, forgetfulness, inability to focus, sleep disturbance, fatigue, among others.
Chiropractors specialize in the nervous system and are trained and qualified to manage and help patients with concussions or post-concussion syndrome. We evaluate concussions with the Sports Concussion Evaluation Tool, SCAT5. This is the standardized tool used by medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers for evaluating and managing the patient for returning to activities.
Chiropractic care offers an excellent way to help your brain and body heal. Adjustments to the upper cervical spine (upper neck) help:
1. Impaired brain function by relieving pressure on the brain stem housed in the spinal canal of the top two vertebrae of the spine.
2. Relieve inhibited blood flow of the vertebral arteries that may be restricted in the vertebral foramen.
3. Free up any reduced cerebral spinal fluid drainage that may be impaired or restricted as it flows from the brain to the spinal cord.
4. Adjustments help to relieve symptoms such as headaches and to stabilize ligaments after whiplash-type injuries.
Chiropractic adjustments, along with proper recommendations for activity restriction, corrective exercises for brain and spinal function, and support for return to normal activity will help the patient recover as quickly and completely as possible.
