Right now we are in the midst of allergy season and cold/flu season is right around the corner. Over the past month or so we have seen quite an increase in sinus congestion and drainage symptoms in patients of all ages, infants to elderly. So what can you do at home to help naturally ease sinus pressure for your kids or yourself? Start by heading to our Facebook page or Instagram to watch our video demonstration. I'll describe the procedures below.
1. Start by gently pressing and massaging from the crease of your nostrils out toward your ears, below your cheek bones. This may be tender depending on the degree of congestion. There are important acupuncture points along this area that you are stimulating by massaging.
2. Next, press between your eye brows and then massage out and across your eyebrows toward your ears. There are also important acupuncture points here.
3. The third step is different for kids than adults. For infants and kids you will gently press on the bridge of the nose and massage up and down, like you are stretching the nose. You can also gently pinch the bridge of the nose and wiggle it. For adults, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth while also wiggling the bring of your nose. This step moves a slender bone in your nose to loosen up mucus.
4. Lastly you can gently pull on your ears. When you have a secure hold on the ear pull out, down, and then back. You should notice a warm sensation in your ears after doing this. You are moving the ear canal and allowing fluid to flow better behind the ear drum.
Always be very gentle while trying these steps. With infants and small kids I use my pinky fingers but with teenagers and adults I tend to use either my pointer or middle fingers.
Have you been experiencing sinus pressure? Along with the above steps I highly recommend seeing your chiropractor. Spinal adjustments allow the body to function better and relieve symptoms of nerve pressure and irritation.
