Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common condition in which a person has a frequent urge to move their legs. This often occurs in the evening with sitting or while trying to sleep at night. The cause of RLS is unknown but researchers have found links between RLS and low levels of Iron and Dopamine, autoimmune disorders, kidney disease, and side effects of medications. The sensations patients report with RLS vary from pain, aching, burning, itching, tingling, and crawling.
Treatment options vary due to the numerous causes of restless leg syndrome. Some patients have relief with taking sleep medications or nerve inhibiting medications. Other options include supplementation with Iron and Magnesium, yoga and stretching, massage, warm baths with epsom salts, and chiropractic care.
The symptoms of restless leg syndrome point to nerve irritation. Chiropractic care focuses on balancing the spine and relieving nerve irritation. Therefore, patients often report a decrease in the frequency of RLS and improved sleeping patterns while under chiropractic care.
